We are only seven percentage points away from being one of the top 20 highest performing school systems in North Carolina. It’s important to note that the state implemented a new math End-of-Grade (EOG) test, which means no retest was available for students who didn’t met proficiency. Traditionally, retest scores boost our results by 5%. The state only used the first administration of the math EOG test for the 2018-19 calculations. But even without the higher retest scores, we still had amazing results! Superintendent Dr. Lane Mills shared a complete snapshot of our 2018-19 results at the Sept. 16 Board of Education meeting. Join us in celebrating these accomplishments:
PERFORMANCE GRADES (Letter grades assigned to schools by the state based on proficiency and growth)
- In 2018-19, 80% of our schools (20 schools) earned either an A, B or C letter grade compared to 45% in 2015-16 and 56% in 2016-17. We also reduced the number of schools earning a D or F. In 2018-19, only five schools earned a D or an F compared to 13 schools in 2015-16 and 11 schools in 2016-17.
- We congratulate Wilson Early College Academy (WECA) for maintaining its A grade once again. Since the inception of the state’s grading system in 2013-14, WECA has always earned an A. We are excited to have a total of three schools that earned an A - New Hope ES, Rock Ridge ES and WECA.
- Five schools earned a B grade: Gardners ES, Lucama ES, Forest Hills MS, Hunt HS and Wilson Academy of Applied Technology, and 12 schools earned a C grade: Frederick Douglass ES, Jones ES, Lee Woodard ES, Stantonsburg ES, Vinson-Bynum ES, Wells ES, Darden MS, Elm City MS, Speight MS, Springfield MS, Beddingfield HS and
Fike HS.
PROFICIENCY (percent of students achieving at grade level on the End-of-Grade (EOG) and End-of-Course (EOC) tests)
- As a district, our overall proficiency on the EOG and EOC tests slightly decreased by 0.4%. However, if you do an apples to apples comparison of the 2018-19 results with the first administration results of the 2017-18 tests, we were actually up 2.2%.
- Science EOG: Fifth-grade science results increased by 9.4% compared to the previous year.
- Reading EOG: Overall results improved 0.4% for grades 3-8 compared to the previous year.
- Mathematics EOG: Overall results decreased by 1%. However, if you do an apples to apples comparison of the 2018-19 results with the first administration results of the 2017-18 tests, we were actually up 4.6%.
- Biology EOC: All three high schools and the two early colleges had increases in performance compared to the previous year.
- Math I EOC: As a district, we increased our performance compared to the previous year.
- English II EOC: As a district, we increased our performance compared to the previous year.
GROWTH (The measure of a year’s worth of learning for students)
- Sixteen out of 26 schools met or exceeded growth, which means more of our students are meeting or exceeding academic expectations. These schools are: Gardners ES, Jones ES, Lee Woodard ES, Lucama ES, New Hope ES, Rock Ridge ES, Stantonsburg ES, Vinson-Bynum ES, Wells ES, Winstead ES, Darden MS, Forest Hills MS, Beddingfield HS, Hunt HS, Wilson Academy of Applied Technology and Wilson Early College Academy.
